The Project
For many years, Beeline Refrigeration has serviced and maintained Jack Brands’ commercial refrigeration units. Following changes in F-gas legislation, regarding the ban of some refrigerants, we replaced their units with a modern, state-of-the art refrigeration system, to ensure compliance.
Jack Brand would have faced fines or closure if the F-gas regulations were not adhered to. Replacing their refrigeration system was essential.
New Legislation
The latest F-gas legislation, which came into force on the 1st January 2015, strengthened the existing regulations which were implemented in 2006. The regulations’ objectives are to contain, prevent and reduce emissions of F-gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol, by:
Beeline Refrigeration holds F-gas certification and works with companies, such as Jack Brand, to ensure compliance during the phase-down of F-gas usage.
Installation Challenges
Our biggest challenge with the project was the location of the compressors. We had limited space to work with as they were situated in a walkway and in a raised location. We needed to gain access through raised wall panels and use lifting equipment to remove and install the compressors.
Solution
To ensure Jack Brand remained operational by complying with the new F-gas regulations, we replaced their two ageing GRASSO compressors with state-of-the-art German BITZER semi-hermetic compressors.
We designed and built the compressors, specifically for Jack Brand, giving the ideal performance and configuration for the location. The resulting compressors were narrow in design to fit neatly in the walk way, allowing access but without causing an obstruction. We also modified the existing electronic control panel to accommodate the new units.
BITZER Ecoline compressors were chosen as they can be used with a variety of refrigerants and meet the demanding requirements of Jack Brand’s large refrigeration plant.
Jack Brand’s factory handles 250,000 birds per week, with the refrigeration units providing cooling for both blast freezing and cold storage. The new compressors have allowed Jack Brand to gain a significant increase in output, with a higher refrigeration capacity, while using minimum energy.
The project also included the removal of R22 refrigerant from the site. The next phase is to upgrade Jack Brand’s evaporators, which will take place over the next few months.
The project was completed on time and within budget, taking 3 – 4 weeks to complete.
